Many fishermen still use lead sinkers. But lead severely harms nature

Annually, 4800 tons of lead enter water bodies from fishing tackle in EU countries alone. This metal is very toxic to ecosystems, especially aquatic ones, writes the Telegram channel "Wild nature nearby".

Lead causes acute and chronic poisoning in wild animals and humans. Waterfowl are poisoned by it when they swallow lost sinkers from the bottom: they mistake them for gastroliths, small stones needed for stomach function.

In the European Union, a ban on the sale of lead fishing weights and tackle has been introduced under the REACH regulation.

At the same time, alternatives to lead exist and have long been used in countries where lead is banned:

  • Tungsten — the main and most popular substitute. It is even denser than lead, so the sinkers are more compact — ideal for feeder fishing and spinning.
  • Steel and cast iron — a budget-friendly and environmentally sound option.
  • Tin — perfectly suited for float fishing, easily crimped onto the line.
  • Brass and copper — a good balance of cost, density, and safety.
  • Stone and pebble — a free and safe option for carp fishing.

In Belarus, the most popular alternative to lead is tungsten. It can be found in almost every specialized store and on marketplaces. Steel, cast iron, and brass sinkers can also be found in the latter.
