Burning Fighter Jet Paralyzed Airport Operations on Zakynthos Island in Greece
According to the Greek Air Force, on July 9, an F-16 fighter jet was performing a training flight when a technical malfunction occurred. The pilot directed the fighter jet to Zakynthos airport.

There at 13:45, the plane landed on the runway and caught fire. The pilot was able to exit the cockpit and was unharmed. Firefighters extinguished the flames, Bild reports.
Since the F-16 wreckage blocked the runway, the airport had to cease operations. Several planes were unable to land or take off, and some were diverted to other airfields. Holidaymakers faced multi-hour delays. Only after the fighter jet was evacuated did the airport resume its operations.
The aircraft belonged to the 335th squadron, based at Araxos Air Base in Western Greece. The cause of the emergency situation is not yet clear.
According to the Kathimerini newspaper, a problem with the landing gear might have occurred. Air Force specialists arrived on Zakynthos to investigate the damaged aircraft.
