A brace by Norway national team forward Erling Haaland in the first round match of the 2026 World Cup against Iraq (4:1) led to microseismic fluctuations in Bergen. The NORSAR Institute of Seismology recorded vibrations that coincided in time with the forward's goals, reports Championat.com
"The most intense vibrations coincide with Erling Haaland's goals, which caused loud cheers among Norwegian fans," a NORSAR statement read.
Experts explained that it was not an earthquake. "When a large number of people simultaneously react to significant sporting moments, their combined movements can create ground vibrations that are registered by highly sensitive seismometers," the institute added.
The signals were recorded by a station in Bergen, where thousands of spectators watched the match, despite the game starting at midnight local time.
The Norwegian national team will play its next match against the Senegal team on June 23. In Norway, it will be two in the morning.
