Radosław Sikorski hopes that Poczobut's release will open a new stage in Polish-Belarusian relations
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated that the release of Andrzej Poczobut was made possible thanks to the cooperation between Poland and the USA, as well as the decision of US President Donald Trump. He also expressed hope that this event could mark the beginning of an improvement in relations between Poland and Lukashenka's Belarus, reports Rmf.pl.
The head of Polish diplomacy expressed hope that Poczobut's release would open a new stage in Polish-Belarusian relations, but — as he noted — the initiative lies with Alexander Lukashenka.
"I don't want to make any empty promises here, as such a 'false dawn' has happened before," he stated.
At the same time, he noted that in these relations, there were episodes of "thaw" in the past, during which there was not a single political prisoner in Belarus.
Sikorski also recalled that Poland was forced to build fortifications on the border with Belarus due to migrant transfer operations conducted by Lukashenka's government.
"We are always ready to respond to positive gestures, but Belarus must first want to become a member of the European family of nations," he said.
