Belarus developed a biochip for allergy detection

It is currently undergoing registration. It may appear in medical institutions by the end of the year.

The pollen season has begun in Belarus — a challenge for allergy sufferers.

Blood tests help identify allergens. There are also skin prick tests. Allergens are applied to small scratches, and the reaction is assessed after 20 minutes. If it turns red, it means there is sensitivity.

As reported by news.by, the Academy of Sciences went further. Belarusian scientists created a biochip. Foreign counterparts cost plus or minus 1,000 rubles per test. The service with the Belarusian development will cost the patient 200 rubles.

This biochip contains tiny dots that hold allergens. A total of 200 items. Patient blood is applied to it, and other necessary reagents are added. This way, a specialist identifies the potential culprit of the problems.

The test is painless, fast, and accurate, scientists promise. The chip is currently undergoing registration trials and will be put into practice by the end of the year.

“We plan to perform diagnostics only in our facility initially. But in the future, we very much hope that we will be able to implement this chip in laboratories throughout the country. Very important: we can change the spectrum. And if we successfully launch this chip into clinical practice in Belarus, then, perhaps, we will also be able to export it. But for this, we need to adapt the chip to a specific country. Hypothetically, for South America. There will be a completely different spectrum of allergens there. We will be able to do this,” said Andrei Goncharov, director of the Institute of Biophysics and Cell Engineering of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
