Meloni government breaks record for time in power in post-war Italy

On Friday, Giorgia Meloni's government marks 1413 days of continuous rule, making it the longest-serving government in the history of the Italian Republic since Benito Mussolini, the Italian fascist dictator, writes "European Pravda".

The current cabinet has surpassed Silvio Berlusconi's second government, which governed for 1412 days.

Meloni's party "Brothers of Italy" is turning this event into a victory celebration.

Thousands of supporters are waiting in Bari, southern Italy, where Meloni will speak at a rally from a stage overlooking the Adriatic Sea under the slogan: "The most stable government – a stronger Italy."

The main question — given that a general election is due next year — is how long Meloni and the right's dominance in Italian politics will last. She is still far from matching Berlusconi, who spent a total of 3340 days in power across all his terms.

"Brothers of Italy" remains, undeniably, the largest single party, polling around 26%, but the overall advantage of Meloni's centre-right coalition has narrowed in several polls this summer compared to the consolidating centre-left bloc.

The next elections are scheduled for September 2027.
