13 Russian Special Forces Killed in Avalanche in Kabardino-Balkaria
The climbers who were covered by an avalanche on September 6 in the Bezengi Gorge of Kabardino-Balkaria turned out to be employees of Russian security forces. They were undergoing planned mountain training exercises.
Among the climbers covered by the avalanche in the Bezengi Gorge were servicemen of the Special Purpose Center «Vityaz» of Rosgvardia, claims the Telegram channel «Dosye Shpiona».
According to its information, 13 servicemen died, and one more is in a coma.
The group of climbers caught in the avalanche in the Bezengi Gorge of Kabardino-Balkaria was undergoing planned training exercises for representatives of law enforcement agencies, and not making a sports ascent, writes «Kommersant».
Alexander Yakovenko, chairman of the sports mountaineering committee of the Russian Mountaineering Federation, told the publication that it was not ordinary tourists who were caught in the avalanche, but employees of law enforcement agencies undergoing planned training exercises.
«This is not a classic ascent, but rather a training process. Participants set up a tent camp and go out for several days to practice techniques for moving on icy terrain and organizing safety ropes,» Yakovenko explained.
In his opinion, it was impossible to predict the collapse: similar cataclysms had not occurred in this area for decades. The Russian Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case on negligence.
The avalanche descended on September 6 from the slope of Mount Mizhirgi and covered a group which, according to updated data, consisted of 33 people. Initially, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations reported only 15 climbers.
According to official data from the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, the death of 12 people has been confirmed. Ten members of the group descended independently, six were hospitalized, and the fate of five more remains unknown.
The search is complicated by the dangerous terrain and repeated collapse of snow-ice mass. A Mi-8 helicopter was deployed to survey the mountain and deliver rescuers.
