Lithuanian politician proposed banning bus routes to Belarus

After Latvia announced plans to ban bus routes to Belarus and Russia from next year, Seimas Deputy Arvydas Anušauskas called on the Lithuanian government to join the initiative of the neighboring country, writes Delfi.lt.

Arvydas Anušauskas addressed Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius and Minister of Communications and Transport Juras Taminskas with a proposal not to extend permits and to begin consultations with Latvia and Estonia regarding a joint decision.

“While Latvia plans to stop bus connections with the aggressor — Russia — and Belarus, which assists it, Lithuania remains one of the main transit corridors for passenger traffic to these states. On the one hand, the state strengthens the protection of the eastern border, invests in defense, and warns about threats emanating from the Belarusian regime. On the other hand, intense bus traffic to Belarusian cities still operates from Vilnius,” the politician stated.

“We call on the Lithuanian government to join Latvia’s initiative, not to extend permits for routes to Russia and Belarus, and to stop transit routes, as Lithuania should not become a country through which the restrictions of Latvia or other EU states are circumvented,” Arvydas Anušauskas declared in his address.

Currently, 29 permits are in force for regular passenger transportation between Lithuania and Russia and Belarus, or in transit through Lithuania.

"Мы заклікаем урад Літвы далучыцца да ініцыятывы Латвіі, не працягваць дазволы на маршруты ў Расію і Беларусь і спыніць транзітныя маршруты, паколькі Літва не павінна станавіцца краінай, праз якую абыходзяцца абмежаванні Латвіі або іншых дзяржаў ЕС"
