Ancient German city in the west prepared for evacuation due to fires
A forest fire raging in Belgium on the border with Germany has already affected an area of about 1600 hectares. Residents of the city of Monschau, located on the German-Belgian border, are advised to prepare for a possible evacuation. Overnight, the flames approached within three kilometers of the German border, writes BILD.

Residents of the affected areas are advised to try to find shelter with friends or relatives if possible. Authorities in North Rhine-Westphalia also plan to organize temporary shelters. On the Belgian side, the evacuation of the towns of Küchelscheid and Leykaul has already begun.
According to official data, Monschau has about 12,000 inhabitants, while the city is visited daily by more than five thousand tourists — up to two million per year.
They come to see the historic center with its preserved half-timbered houses, which remained undamaged during World War II.
Monschau has been recognized as the most beautiful small town in Germany.
