The World's Tallest Timber Skyscraper Built in Sydney

In Sydney, Australia, the frame of the Atlassian Central skyscraper has been completed, becoming the world's tallest building to use timber constructions. The tower's height reached 180 meters, more than double the record of the previous leader — the Ascent building in Milwaukee, USA, which is 86.6 meters tall, reports New Atlas.

The project was developed by architectural firms SHoP Architects and BVN Architecture. The new skyscraper is being built in Sydney's new business district.

The building features a hybrid design: a reinforced concrete core, a steel exterior frame, and approximately 10,000 cubic meters of engineered timber. The primary materials used are glued laminated timber columns and cross-laminated timber panels.

This combination is currently considered the most effective for constructing tall timber buildings. It provides the necessary strength, allows for faster assembly due to the use of prefabricated elements, and reduces the carbon footprint compared to conventional office skyscrapers.

According to the developers, the use of this technology is expected to reduce construction-related emissions by approximately 50 percent. Additionally, the building will be about twice as energy-efficient in operation as traditional office towers.

Inside the skyscraper, there will be 39 floors. The main area will be occupied by Atlassian company offices. Also planned are a four-story collaborative work center with natural lighting and ventilation, a hostel, several green terraces, and a rooftop garden.

A special feature of the project will also be the preservation of a historic building that was already on the site. It will be restored and integrated into the main foyer of the new complex.

After the completion of the main frame, builders are continuing with the installation of the facade, which will integrate solar panels and an automated cooling system. Construction is planned to be completed by the end of the year.
