Kenya is investigating the mysterious death of 15 elephants that died within a month in Amboseli National Park. Most of the deceased animals suffered from partial paralysis before death, reports The Guardian.

According to the Kenya Wildlife Service, 10 elephants exhibited paralysis for two days before their death. It is currently difficult to determine what happened to the remaining five: their carcasses were heavily decomposed or partially eaten by other animals.

Among the deceased, there was only one male; the rest were females and calves.

Preliminary sample analyses conducted at the University of Nairobi laboratory revealed a potentially toxic substance. However, a government laboratory that performed separate analyses has not yet found the toxins being tested for.

Therefore, the investigation continues. Specialists are analyzing not only the tissues of the deceased animals but also water sources and other potential environmental contamination factors in the areas where the dead elephants were found.

Authorities emphasize that at this time, there is no evidence that the possible disease or cause of death of the elephants can be transmitted to humans.

Cases of elephant poisoning have occurred in Kenya before. The animals could have been poisoned by poachers or local residents due to human-wildlife conflicts.

A similar mass death of elephants was observed in Botswana in 2020. Scientists then concluded that the probable cause could have been water poisoning, where dangerous substances accumulated due to the proliferation of cyanobacteria. According to researchers, climate change might have contributed to the spread of such organisms.
