According to information from The Washington Post, 83-year-old former U.S. President Joe Biden, who is undergoing treatment for prostate cancer with bone metastases, has recently become noticeably weaker and rarely appears in public.
According to the publication, after leaving the White House, Biden mostly spends time with a close circle of family, long-time friends, and former aides. People from his entourage told journalists on condition of anonymity that the former president's health condition causes concern, and his treatment, in their opinion, may not be yielding the expected results.
They also believe that it may be harder for Biden to conceal his weakened state in the autumn, as his memoirs are set to be released in November, and he will need to participate in their presentation.
Earlier in July, an American appeals court allowed the conservative think tank Heritage Foundation to obtain audio recordings and transcripts of Biden's conversations with writer Mark Zwonitzer, who helped him prepare his memoirs. These materials were obtained by the U.S. Department of Justice during an investigation into Biden's handling of classified documents. They were one of the reasons why Special Counsel Robert Hur previously characterized Biden as an elderly man with memory problems.
Questions about Biden's age, physical stamina, and cognitive abilities remained one of the main topics during his presidency. They became particularly acute after his debate with Donald Trump in the summer of 2024, when Biden appeared tired, spoke with a weak voice, and sometimes lost his train of thought. Following a wave of criticism, he withdrew from the presidential race several weeks later.
In May 2025, several months after Trump's return to the White House, Biden was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer. According to medical assessment, such a disease is considered incurable, but in some cases, it can be managed with treatment.
Former U.S. First Lady Jill Biden previously said that the diagnosis came as a surprise to the family. According to her, they were shocked that by the time the disease was discovered, it had already reached stage four and spread to the bones. At the same time, she gave cautiously optimistic assessments and claimed that the treatment was helping.
After leaving office, Biden's representatives long refrained from commenting on the details of his condition. In autumn 2025, his office announced that he was undergoing radiation and hormone therapy, and had also had surgery to remove cancerous skin lesions.
Biden himself, in early July, when announcing the release of his memoirs, briefly stated that he was continuing treatment and that it was going "very well."
