In Lida, during excavation work on the territory of the electrical products factory, brick crypts with sarcophagi from the late 19th century were discovered. The factory was built on the site of an old Orthodox necropolis, whose gravestones were destroyed by Soviet authorities until the 1980s.
As the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus reports, after the discovery of the burial complexes, construction work was stopped. An archaeological expedition is currently working on the site, conducting protective excavations.
Specialists found intact brick crypts from the late 19th century with complete sarcophagi. Of particular value to researchers is the identified burial of Yulian Zdanovich — a lieutenant colonel of the 172nd Lida Infantry Regiment. Scientists and local authorities are now addressing issues of stabilization and conservation of the discovered items, and are planning the procedure for the official reburial of the remains.
The old Orthodox cemetery near the Holy George Church in Lida was formed around 1865. It was one of the main city necropolises, where priests, military personnel, and prominent figures were buried. In particular, Maria Navitskaya, the founder of the first Lida women's gymnasium, Belarusian socio-political figures Yulian Sakovich and Leanid Marakou, as well as the Minister of Defense of the BNR General Kipryan Kandratovich (whose remains were transferred and reburied during the years of independence), were interred there.
During Soviet times, a large number of gravestones were demolished precisely for the construction of the Lida Electrical Products Factory. The remaining monuments were planned for later destruction to lay a road: in the 1980s, a secretly brought detachment of Komsomol members from Navahrudak knocked down stone crosses and gravestones overnight. Only a part of the necropolis survived.
To this day, only a part of the original cemetery around the church itself has survived. Today, memorial plaques with the names of prominent individuals whose graves were lost during the factory's construction are installed there.
