Ukrainians named the number of Belarusians fighting on Russia's side and how many of them died
During a meeting on May 26 at the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, representatives of the Belarusian delegation requested information from the Ukrainian side regarding citizens of Belarus participating in the war on the side of the Russian Federation.
According to the Ukrainian side, as of May 20, 2026, 2871 citizens of Belarus were fighting on the side of Russia. It is reported that 440 of them have already been killed.
Some of these Belarusians were living in Russia at the time of the war.
The exact number of Belarusian volunteers who fought on the side of Ukraine is unknown. Most Kalinouski Regiment members conceal their names to protect their relatives inside Belarus from persecution. According to journalists' estimates, more than 1000 Belarusians fought on the side of Ukraine. At least 81 of them have died.
For participation in the defense of Ukraine, Belarusians face lengthy prison sentences in Belarus. At the same time, citizens of the Republic of Belarus are not prosecuted for recruitment into the Russian army.
