Svetlana Kurs-Aleksievich: We must all pay with blood for the Russian language and literature

At the creative meeting, the Nobel laureate spoke out in defense of the Russian language. Another well-known writer, Svetlana Kurs, disagreed with her.

Writer Svetlana Kurs (pseudonym Eva Vezhnovets) spoke in Warsaw at the Museum of Modern Art. Nobel laureate Svetlana Alexievich also held a meeting there today. Among other things, Alexievich touched on the issue of the Russian language — she believes that it would be wrong to cross it out along with Russian culture. Svetlana Kurs has a different vision. Her words are quoted by Belsat.

«I deeply appreciate Mrs. Svetlana, because I owe her wisdom and steadfastness. She is an example for me. She is my literary patron, but I will not hide the fact that I have a completely opposite attitude to Russian culture and language. I believe they have failed. They have one and a half good writers. And for these writers, we all around the perimeter have to pay with blood.

This cultural project has failed. And language is the bearer of national character. The Russian language and literature carry the character of imperialism and the destruction of everything that is not Russian. We in Belarus know this very well. Until this changes, I do not want to have anything to do with them.

Russia has failed God even more than old age. At the same time, I am very closely following Russia, the trends that are going on there. And I don't see anything healthy there. Healthy people there, maybe one in ten. And I feel very sorry for them, as they are alien in their society and in the world, where they are looked at as Germans after the Second World War.

I am offended by the Russians for what they have done to us and continue to do. They are exterminating hundreds of nations and peoples inside Russia by sending them to war. My heart will be in the shadows for the rest of my life, I don't want to have anything to do with them.»

Svetlana Kurs also discussed how supporters and opponents of Lukashenko can live together.

«I will quote Sergei Dovlatov, who said: «I have no antagonism towards you, even towards you, you moron.» I have acute antagonism towards GUBOPiK, but not towards the «yabatki,» because we have to live with them, and it seems to me that there will be no big problems, because ordinary people are not to blame. And we know who is to blame.»
