Lithuania plans to restrict Belarusians' ability to buy real estate
Lithuania has agreed on a proposal to restrict citizens of Belarus from acquiring real estate near military territories and other objects important for national security. This was announced by Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys.
According to the Lithuanian minister, such measures should reduce possible risks to the operation of strategic facilities. Restrictions are planned to be introduced for both citizens of Belarus and citizens of Russia.
The proposal regarding Belarusians has been included in the list of draft laws that the Lithuanian Seimas is to consider in the autumn. Its consideration is proposed to take place in November.
At the same time, restrictions on real estate purchases for Russians are already in effect, but they are not directly related to the location of housing near strategic facilities.
Currently, Russian citizens without a residence permit or permanent residency in Lithuania cannot acquire real estate. This prohibition does not apply to those who have the relevant residency documents.
For citizens of Belarus, there is no general similar restriction yet: they can buy apartments in Lithuania even without a Lithuanian residence permit. The new proposal should change this situation regarding real estate near objects important for national security.
