Culture: Other11

For the Week of Belarusian Culture, the Lutskievich Museum will transform into the Popka Museum

From September 7—13, the Ivan Lutskievich Belarusian Museum in Vilnius will host the IV Week of Belarusian Culture. This year, its main theme will be heritage — what we preserve, lose, pass on, and what remains after us.

At the heart of the Week — a new exhibition from Yury Popka's collection, part of which was saved and transported from Germany to Vilnius. Textiles, books, magazines, postcards, letters, and other items will transform the museum space for one week and will serve as an occasion to discuss not only one collection but also the fate of Belarusian cultural heritage in general.

Can a person take care in advance of what will remain after them? What happens to private collections when their owners are no longer there? Why do some items survive decades and relocations, while others are lost forever? Who decides what is worth preserving, and how?

These questions will resonate throughout the entire Week — in the exhibition, discussions, theater, music, master classes, and even at the table.

Program

Monday: Exhibition opening and lecture.

Preservation: A lecture on how exhibits are cared for in museums and how to replicate this at home.

Tuesday: Historical-gastronomic evening.

Belarus, Lithuania, and Germany will meet at one table. We will discuss the culinary traditions of the three countries, look at postcards from Popka's collection, and search for traces of everyday life and food there.

And, of course, we will taste everything.

Wednesday: Discussion about heritage.

What will (not) remain after us.

An evening for those who love complex questions without simple answers;

Embroidery master class based on patterns from Popka's collection: we embroider, and then turn our works into iron-on patches.

Thursday: Day off.

Friday: Belarusian dramaturgy aloud.

A team of Belarusian actors and directors from TeArtas, led by Siarhiej Zdaronkaŭ, will present a staged reading of Frantsišak Aliachnovič's play «Mr. Minister» (thanks to our museum's archives). The event will open a new project «Retrospective of Belarusian Dramaturgy», dedicated to returning to Belarusian dramatic texts and their new sound today.

Saturday: A big day at the Belarusian House.

The program includes:

— curator-led exhibition tour;

— paper marbling master class;

— children's workshop, where participants will create their own small house and grow a magic tree in it;

— fair of Belarusian artisans and a small book market;

— concert program.

Also, throughout the Week, you can experience being an exhibit of Belarusian heritage yourself. A special immersive space will be operating in the museum. You are being transported from Germany to Lithuania. You need to be delivered, not lost, not damaged, not eaten by bugs, and ultimately, it needs to be determined: are you needed by someone enough to be preserved?

The IV Week of Belarusian Culture will take place from September 7—13 at the Ivan Lutskievich Belarusian Museum in Vilnius (Vilniaus g. 20).

    Каково будет разочарование определенного круга проктологов-любителей, когда они узнают, что то, что их привлекло - это всего лишь фамилия вполне респектабельного коллекционера!
