In pursuit of political points, Riga once again forgot about people, stated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus.
The Belarusian foreign policy department stated that they have no doubt that this cynical step was taken on the eve of the elections to the Saeima of Latvia, which will be held on October 3.
"What is most striking is that in pursuit of political points, Riga once again forgot about people. No one bothered to warn citizens in advance, making them a bargaining chip in a political game. The situation mirrors the unceremonious practice of the Lithuanian authorities at the end of 2025, when the border was also closed without warning under a fabricated pretext," stated MFA spokesman Ruslan Varankou.
"We regard what happened as another violation of those very 'European values' that are so often spoken about in the Baltic countries. The freedom of movement of citizens was once again brutally sacrificed to the immediate domestic political situation," the MFA notes and states that the Belarusian side reserves the right to take retaliatory measures against Latvia, "including those of an asymmetric nature, for the protection of national interests and citizens of Belarus."
Latvia closed the border on Friday. Latvian Interior Minister Jānis Dambrava officially explained this with "technical reasons."
Until now, only one border crossing point operated between Belarus and Latvia: Grigorovshchina — Paternieki.
The decision to close was made against the backdrop of an increasing number of attempts by migrants to illegally cross the Belarusian-Latvian border. According to Latvian authorities, dozens of such attempts have been recorded daily in recent weeks.
