Morocco Named Two Reasons for the Influx of Migrants into Ceuta
More than two thousand people out of 70 thousand have not yet returned to Morocco.
Morocco's Ministry of Interior officially explained the reasons for the mass influx of migrants into Spanish Ceuta last week, Bild writes.
The first reason is false information on social media. The influx of migrants arose spontaneously, a ministry representative stated. Many migrants told Spanish media that they learned about the supposedly open border through videos and messages on platforms like TikTok.
The second reason, according to the Moroccan ministry, is an incorrect interpretation of a Spanish court ruling, according to which migrants detained at sea can no longer be immediately returned.
At the same time, Morocco reaffirmed its commitment to combating illegal migration.
However, this statement is contradicted by data from Spanish security forces, according to which Moroccan border guards withdrew from the border with Ceuta shortly before the mass border crossing. According to Spanish media reports, several migrants independently stated that they were not stopped, but on the contrary — were encouraged to cross the border.
More than two thousand people have not yet returned to Morocco. The situation on the coast of Ceuta is reported to have stabilized.
“Almost all who arrived in Ceuta have by now returned to Morocco,” wrote Spain's Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, on social network X.
According to data from Spain's Ministry of Interior, around two and a half thousand Moroccan citizens are still in Ceuta. Bild correspondent Dmitry Soybel also reported that hundreds of migrants remain in the Spanish enclave.
