A nearly 100-year-old house at the corner of Mickiewicz and Filaret streets in Grodno has been demolished — yet another monument of wooden constructivism
The wooden green building at the corner of Mickiewicz and Metropolitan Filaret streets in Grodno has been demolished. This was reported by city residents on social media, writes Hrodna.life. The house in the style of wooden constructivism from the 1930s had been vacant for a long time, and then it was decided to convert it into a hotel. Initially, it was planned to preserve part of the house. But, apparently, the hotel building at this location will be constructed anew.
Future hotel project and reconstruction plans
Previously, it was reported that the project for the future hotel at Mickiewicz St., 1 involved the reconstruction of the building. Later, information emerged that only two facades of the original building in the historic New World district would remain, in a modified form. The neighboring single-story house built in 1915 will also be redeveloped.
According to the project documentation, the ground floor was to house the hotel lobby, a restaurant, and a cafe. The second and third floors were designated for hotel rooms and apartments, and auxiliary facilities for public catering were planned for the basement.
The building was planned to have centralized cold water supply, sewerage, ventilation, and air conditioning, with heating from a designed autonomous boiler house. The customer for the works is the trading house "Shakotsis".
Since the building is located in the water protection zone of the Yurysdyka River and in the protection zone of the historical and cultural value "Historic Center of Grodno", the project was to be implemented taking into account a comprehensive scientific study by LLC "Scientific and Project Center "RESTABILIS". All earthworks and construction works required strict archaeological supervision.
The building on the corner of Mickiewicz was built after 1932, according to the guidebook "Biography of Grodno Streets". It is an example of wooden constructivism. The house has horizontal cladding. The main volume is two stories high. The compositional expressiveness is built on the correlation of volumes of modules of different heights. The low-pitched roof, sloping on all sides, is hidden behind a wide cornice. The windows of the building vary in size.
On the module for the shop, they are wide, display windows; in the residential part, they have shutters of the same design, but due to the window sills, they are perceived as a single rhythm. The small square windows on the third floor give this part of the building the appearance of a tower. Possibly, in 1937, one of the shops of the "Ranak" (Jutrzenka) society was located here.
The last residents moved out in 2017. Among the plans was the demolition of the house and the construction of a shopping center on this site. In 2020, the building was put up for auction along with houses at Mickiewicz, 7 and Mickiewicz, 9. The latter two were then sold to a different owner, and works are already underway there.
In recent months, the city has lost two more iconic buildings in the style of constructivism and functionalism.
Thus, in March 2026, it became known about the demolition of a wooden interwar period house at Osipenko Street, 3. The house, built in the 1930s in the style of functionalism and wooden constructivism, was part of the "Teacher's Colony" ensemble — a complex of wooden buildings unique for Belarus.
In May, another wooden house from the interwar period was demolished — the building at Chkalava Street, 13. It was built in the 1930s and was considered an example of wooden constructivism. The house was also part of the "Teacher's Colony".
