Low Quality Restoration of Lida Castle to Be Fixed at Contractors’ Expense

The mistakes that were made during the restoration of the 14th-century castle in Lida, Hrodna region, will be corrected at the expense of the contractors, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Culture informs.

The Lida Castle is a priority of the government`s castle restoration program, Culture Minister Paviel Latushka said during a meeting that was held on Wednesday in the recently restored 16th-18th century Radzivil Castle in Niasvizh, Minsk region.

“I think that restoration work may be completed within two years,” Latushka said. “However, we`ll certainly have to correct all mistakes that were made by construction organizations and restorers.”

A total of seven billion rubles ($811,000) is expected to be provided in 2013 for the completion of the restoration project. The money is to go toward the construction of museum facilities inside the courtyard, restoration of the 14th-century walls and other work that will make it possible for the castle to receive visitors in 2014.

The “mistakes” mentioned by Paviel Latushka include the renovation of the half-ruined stone walls on the ancient castle with common construction bricks and the widespread use of crude reinforced concrete structures and modern design features.
