In Indonesia, several people publicly flogged for premarital sex
In the Indonesian province of Aceh, by court decision acting under Sharia law, 11 people were publicly flogged . Four of them – two women and two men – were found guilty of sexual relations outside of marriage. Each received 100 lashes with a cane.

Another four people were punished with 22 lashes for violations related to so-called physical intimacy. This can include, for example, kissing or hugging. Two received seven lashes for excessive closeness – in particular, it could even refer to them holding hands. Another man was punished with 20 lashes for consuming alcohol.
Aceh operates a special criminal legislation based on Sharia. Public flogging there can be applied for gambling, alcohol consumption, intimate closeness between unmarried people, and also for same-sex relations. Punishments often take place in public view.
The special regime of Sharia law has been in force in Aceh since 2002. It is the only province in Indonesia where Islamic law is officially applied.
Harsh Sharia punishments have been repeatedly criticized by the United Nations. The UN believes that public flogging is a degrading punishment for human dignity.
