An old stone building near the town hall in Mogilev was being prepared for the city museum. Now it's being turned into an office for the Russian embassy, headed by a former 'LPR' minister
In Mogilev, a major renovation of a historical building has begun. The building, which features a mural with 'Pahonia' on its end, was previously intended for the expansion of the Mogilev History Museum, but was unexpectedly transferred for use by a branch of the Embassy of the Russian Federation. Three such branches are planned to open simultaneously in all eastern regional centers.
The two-story brick building at 5a Leninskaya Street is located directly behind the city hall. In 2018, it was transferred to the Mogilev History Museum for creating exhibitions and housing collections. During a technical inspection in 2023, experts determined its construction time – the mid-18th century – based on the brick size.
Currently, the object is undergoing major renovation with modernization. According to public procurement documents, the cost of the work is about 613 thousand rubles from the city budget. In the new project documentation, the building's museum functions are no longer mentioned, nor is its actual new purpose. Only 2.5 months are allocated for the completion of all works.
According to the approved reconstruction project, the exterior walls of the historic building will be insulated with mineral wool slabs. However, the state expert review prohibited covering the artistic mural on the end of the building with insulation and painting over it. The documentation specifies the requirement to preserve this artwork.
The mural with the coat of arms and a 1702 engraving was created in 2017 for the 750th anniversary of Mogilev by artist Ryhor Sharayeu with sponsored funds. The coat of arms of Mogilev features the Pahonia emblem above the depicted gate.
The renovated building will house a branch of the Embassy of the Russian Federation. The decision to allocate these premises to Russian diplomats was approved by Alexander Lukashenka on May 21, 2026.
Uladzislau Dainieha has been appointed head of the Russian branch in Mogilev. Until 2014, he was a deputy of the Alchevsk city council (Ukraine) from the Party of Regions. After the conflict began in Donbas, he sided with pro-Russian forces and from 2017 to 2022 served as 'Minister of Foreign Affairs' of the unrecognized Luhansk People's Republic (LPR). Dainieha is under sanctions by the EU, USA, UK, Canada, Switzerland, and Japan, and in Ukraine, he is facing criminal charges.
Russia continues to expand its diplomatic presence in Belarusian regions. In addition to the general consulates in Brest and Grodno, Russian branches are preparing to open in the regional centers of three eastern regions: Mogilev, Gomel, and Vitebsk. For the Vitebsk representative office, the authorities also allocated a historical building in the city center – the former mansion of city architect Tsikhan Kibardin, built in the late 19th century.
