An unknown number of public Claude chats appeared in Google search results. Among the indexed pages were medical documents, internal company materials, crypto keys, as well as names and phone numbers of children.
The problem was discovered by Reddit users. They found that by using a search query for the address claude.ai/share, a long list of published conversations can be found, writes Devby.io.
The leak affected not ordinary private chats, but conversations for which users created a public link. The Claude interface warns that such a chat can be opened by "anyone with the link," however, many might not have understood that search engines are also capable of indexing the page.
Anthropic stated that it does not provide search engines with directories or maps of published chats. According to the company, links could only have entered the index after users posted them on search-engine-accessible websites, forums, or social networks.
Links sent personally, Anthropic claims, do not appear in search results.
However, journalists found among the results a real patient's medical report, clinical trial results with participants' names, documents with personal data of schoolchildren, materials for internal use, and employee feedback. Program code and work notes were also publicly available.
