Brest celebrated its 1007th anniversary from July 24 to 26. An unusual art object was created specifically for the holiday — large scales on which visitors were offered to determine their weight not in kilograms, but in original units of measurement. Ten options were offered, including draniki (potato pancakes), shrimp, glazed cheese curds, foamy drink, coins, and other items. The results were accompanied by humorous comments.

The city executive committee noted that they expected great interest in the new object, and these expectations were met. Queues for the scales did not disappear from morning till late evening, and a total of more than five thousand people used them. The most popular units of measurement were draniki and the foamy drink. Many visitors also wanted to find out their weight in flowers and money.

The scales will now be temporarily removed for software refinement. In addition, some less popular units of measurement are planned to be replaced with new ones to make the attraction even more interesting.

After modernization, the art object is planned to be placed on one of Brest's central streets. The most likely location mentioned is the embankment of the Mukhavets River, where the scales will be accessible to both city residents and tourists.

The interactive scales are 3.8 meters high, approximately four meters wide, and weigh about 1.3 tons. They were created in the likeness of classic scales with a control platform, once used in Soviet stores. One of Brest's industrial enterprises was responsible for their design and manufacture.

City authorities also plan to periodically update the set of unusual units of measurement depending on the season and holidays. For example, during New Year's celebrations, visitors might be offered to measure their weight in tangerines, champagne bottles, or Christmas tree decorations. The city executive committee noted that the software allows for a significant expansion of such options, so their number will increase over time.
