Trump believes the FIFA president is respected worldwide.

US President Donald Trump would like to see FIFA President Gianni Infantino as UN Secretary-General, reports New York Post.
The President of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) grew close to Trump during the organization and hosting of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Last December, he presented Trump with the FIFA Peace Award.
According to a source close to the US President, Trump believes Infantino "is respected worldwide" and recognizes that "he possesses a special ability to bring people together."
A new UN Secretary-General will be elected this year to succeed Portugal's António Guterres, who will leave office at the end of December. To take this position, Infantino would need to secure the support of all 15 members of the UN Security Council, with the five permanent members holding veto power. After that, the candidacy would need to be approved by the UN General Assembly.
It is currently unclear whether Infantino himself is interested in the position of UN Secretary-General and how thoroughly Trump has discussed this matter with him. However, as the New York Post notes, the US leader sees a real possibility for such an appointment amidst seven candidates whom one insider described as "weak."
