Reportedly, Hernán Alberto Gil Flores had been under the ruins of a shopping center in the coastal city of La Guaira since June 24. During the earthquake, he was on duty and in a guard booth. It was the booth that protected him from fatal injuries and created an air pocket, which allowed the man to survive.

The rescue of this person became a very rare case, as usually the chances of finding survivors under rubble sharply decrease after 48–72 hours following a disaster. In this case, the man's survival was aided by the fact that rescuers managed to maintain contact with him and provide him with water and food. Thanks to this, the man was able to live under the rubble much longer than is usually considered possible.

The rescue operation continues. The search for people under the rubble is now being conducted in maximum silence so that any possible calls for help can be heard. At night, rescuers also monitor for any light signals.

According to the latest official data, the death toll from the earthquakes in Venezuela has risen to 2,295 people.

Two powerful earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck the country on June 24. They were among the strongest in Venezuela in the last century.
