Not a single Minsk, Gomel, Italian or French one. But in Mogilev, the fourth Russian courtyard is already being built, this time — with a bear

In the center of Mogilev, a "Yaroslavl Courtyard" is being built — already the fourth such area in the city, dedicated to Russian cities and decorated accordingly.

The Mogilev City Executive Committee reported that a concrete gazebo on columns has already been erected in the courtyard on Leninskaya Street, 34, and soon the main highlight of the new recreation zone will appear — a climbing wall in the shape of a bear, the symbol of Russian Yaroslavl.

This is already the fourth such object in Mogilev. It all started 20 years ago, when in 2006, the Moscow Courtyard with a town in the shape of the Kremlin opened on Leninskaya Street next to houses 59 and 61, and in 2007, the Tula Courtyard with a large samovar appeared on Leningradskaya Street, 45. Quite recently, in the summer of 2025, the Khabarovsk Courtyard was opened on Leninskaya Street with pomp and ribbon-cutting by officials.

The location for the Yaroslavl Courtyard was also chosen along the main pedestrian Leninskaya Street, in the courtyard of the pre-revolutionary Atlivannikov house (No. 34) in Art Nouveau style. Even before the war, a gap formed in the development between it and house No. 32, where brick outbuildings and a bakery stood. Several years ago, all historical buildings here were demolished to erect a Jewish educational center, which turned out to be absolutely unrelated to the Leninskaya development. It is directly opposite its main facade that the new courtyard is now being created.

As a result of such chaotic construction, a random square was formed, and the courtyards of the pre-revolutionary houses were opened directly onto the lively pedestrian street.

The reaction of city residents on social networks to yet another "improvement" was far from unanimous approval.

Some residents were outraged by such eyewash. They are indignant that in the historical center, where objectively far fewer people live than in residential areas, yet another landscaped playground is being built.

"What's wrong with children from residential areas? When will we hear that a playground in the courtyard on Orlovsky Street is being improved? Something was done in 2000, now only frames and rot."

Another valid question was about the concept itself.

"Why not Brest or Gomel [courtyard]? What kind of city is Yaroslavl, where is it — who knows," one commentator sincerely wondered.

He was supported by another Mogilev resident, who proposed a much more logical alternative:

"There is an idea to make Belarusian courtyards and in Belarusian: for example, the Minsk Courtyard. A miniature of a recognizable monument and a stylized stand with the history of the city. That would be cool."
