Germany did not get a seat on the UN Security Council. Russia may be behind the defeat in the vote.
Yesterday's vote at the UN General Assembly in New York turned into a failure for the German government: the country failed to secure a non-permanent seat on the Security Council for 2027 and 2028, losing to Austria and Portugal. The decision was made during a secret ballot, Bild writes .

In addition to the permanent members of the Security Council – China, France, Great Britain, Russia, and the USA – the body includes ten other states elected for a two-year term.
The defeat at the UN, it is alleged, was a severe blow to Friedrich Merz, who at the beginning of his chancellorship announced Germany's return "to the European and international arena."
Against the backdrop of Germany's lost vote, calls are already being heard in the country to cut German funding for the UN.
“As a result, one of the world's largest economies will not participate in discussions on important decisions. Moreover, we are one of the largest donors to the UN. If, in the future, we do not have the influence there that we are entitled to, the question arises: why then should we continue to invest so much money in the UN?” stated Manfred Penz, Minister for International Affairs of the state of Hesse.
Germany is currently the second-largest donor to the UN in the world after the United States. In 2024, Berlin allocated €4.4 billion to support the international organization.
Also, Berlin states that Russia may be behind Germany's defeat in the vote.
Moscow actively lobbied many countries in the Global South to vote against Germany's candidacy, Reuters reported, citing German diplomats.
According to the head of the German Foreign Ministry, Johann Wadephul, Russia opposed Germany due to fears that German representatives would begin to prioritize the war in Ukraine on the agenda. The Kremlin wanted to prevent such a development.
The outcome of the vote at the General Assembly was also influenced by Germany's own position. In particular, Berlin's restrained stance regarding the controversial U.S. operation in Venezuela, from the perspective of international law, was met with dissatisfaction in Latin America.
