Metropolitan Hilarion, in whose car white powder was found, Moscow transferred from Czechia to a Brazilian backwater
Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus' has determined a new place of service for Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfeev). He has been sent to the Argentinian and South American Diocese.

The corresponding decree of the Patriarch appeared on the official website of the Russian Orthodox Church. According to the document, the hierarch is ordered to permanently reside in Brazil. His places of service are designated as the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in the city of Santa Rosa and the Church of Saint Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian in the city of Campina das Missões.
The Patriarchate's message notes that Metropolitan Hilarion "due to objective circumstances" cannot serve in Karlovy Vary, and therefore he is being sent to the Argentine and South American Diocese.
This decision was preceded by a high-profile scandal in Europe.
The hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church was detained on Sunday, May 24, in Czechia — "containers with a white substance" were found in his car.
The Russian side demanded the "immediate release" of the Metropolitan and an end to the "persecution of ROC representatives in Czechia".
On May 30, Metropolitan Hilarion returned to Russia. Now, instead of European parishes, the Russian hierarch will have to serve in South America.
Who is Metropolitan Hilarion?
In the past, Hilarion (Alfeev) was the head of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate and was considered one of the people closest to Patriarch Kirill. In 2022, he was appointed head of the Budapest Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church.
However, after a high-profile scandal involving allegations of harassment, Hilarion was sent to the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in the famous resort town of Karlovy Vary, where a large Russian diaspora resides.
