For International Tolkien Reading Day, Warner Bros. prepared a special announcement.
The director of «The Lord of the Rings», Peter Jackson, announced that he is working with a «special partner» on the next film, with the working title «The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past».
This partner turned out to be late-night show host Stephen Colbert. Colbert is a long-time fan of Tolkien.
In a conversation with Jackson, he revealed that the plot of his film will be based on chapters from «The Fellowship of the Ring» that were not included in the 2001 film adaptation.
«You know what these books and your films mean to me. But I kept rereading six chapters that you never filmed, and I thought it could be a separate story,» Colbert told Jackson.
The official film description has the following synopsis: «The events will unfold fourteen years after Frodo's death, when Sam, Merry, and Pippin embark on a small journey to retrace part of that same quest. At this time, Sam's daughter, Elanor, will discover an old secret that almost destroyed all the heroes last time.»
The start date for filming is not yet known.
The film trilogy «The Lord of the Rings» is based on Tolkien's novel of the same name and consists of the films «The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring», «The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers», and «The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King». Peter Jackson served as producer, screenwriter, and director for the trilogy. The films were released between 2001 and 2003.
In total, the three films were nominated for 30 «Oscar» awards, winning 17, which is a record for film trilogies. «The Return of the King» (Best Picture, Best Director, Screenplay, Music, and Song) won in all categories for which it was nominated; its «Oscar» for Best Picture was widely regarded as a well-deserved award for the entire trilogy.
