At the meeting of Belarusians in North America, they called for the creation of a World Belarusian Congress
On September 5-7, the 36th Meeting of Belarusians of North America took place in New York — the oldest regular forum of the Belarusian diaspora in the USA and Canada, held every two years.

As reported to Svaboda by event participant Ales Kot, the 36th Meeting of Belarusians of North America initiated work on creating a World Belarusian Congress. The forum also discussed international cooperation of the Belarusian diaspora and Belarusian presence in the modern information space.
"Events in Belarus and the world, threats to Belarusian statehood, a new wave of emigration, and a significant expansion of the Belarusian presence in various countries have raised the question for participants not only about preserving traditional communities but also about new forms of collective action and responsibility for the future of Belarus," said forum participant Ales Kot.
The discussion focused on the consolidation of the Belarusian diaspora and the creation of a permanent communication mechanism between Belarusian organizations in different countries. Participants concluded that the global Belarusian community has significant human, professional, and organizational potential, yet regular connections and information exchange between its communities remain insufficient.
The meeting participants deemed it expedient to bring the idea of a World Belarusian Congress to a broader discussion.
This idea was reflected in the resolution of the 36th Meeting, which noted that "in conditions where millions of Belarusians are deprived of the opportunity to freely participate in the social and political life of their country, the Belarusian diaspora, as an integral part of the Belarusian nation, holds particular importance."
On behalf of the participants of the 36th Meeting of Belarusians of North America, a call was made: "Wherever we live, we remain one Belarusian Nation. No Belarusian community abroad can ever replace Belarus. Our Homeland is in Belarus."
The World Belarusian Congress is proposed as one of the tools for Belarusian unity.
The model, structure, powers, and principles of representation of the congress are not yet defined. These issues are proposed for wide discussion within the Belarusian diaspora.
