Kusama was born in 1929 in Matsumoto. Even in childhood, she experienced visual hallucinations. Later, this experience was reflected in her work — especially in the repetitive patterns of dots and nets that became her signature style.

In 1957, the artist moved to the USA. In New York, she became one of the prominent representatives of the avant-garde art scene, working with painting, sculpture, performance, and installations.

Among her most famous works are pumpkin-shaped sculptures and the series of mirrored installations Infinity Mirror Rooms, which create the illusion of infinite space.

In 1973, Kusama returned to Japan. Later, she voluntarily moved into a psychiatric clinic in Tokyo, but continued to work daily in her studio nearby. In addition to visual art, she wrote novels and poems.

Kusama's exhibitions were held in the world's largest museums, and her works sold at auctions for millions of dollars. In 2016, she received the Japanese Order of Culture for her contribution to art.

Kusama continued to create almost until the last days of her life. According to her representatives, the artist did not let go of her brush until the very end.
