The newly formed pro-government party "Adilet" won an overwhelming majority in the snap parliamentary elections in Kazakhstan, according to exit polls. The result will strengthen the power of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, writes Reuters.com
According to three different exit polls published by Kazakhstan's state media, the "Adilet" party garnered between 70% and 72% of the votes with a turnout of over 74%. Four small opposition parties also secured seats in parliament, although they are considered loyal to Tokayev.
The "Adilet" party was created this year by the president's closest advisers, and it quickly absorbed the former ruling party "Amanat".
The victory of "Adilet" will likely strengthen Tokayev's control over the country at the expense of figures more closely associated with his predecessor, Nursultan Nazarbayev.
