In Slonim region, schoolchildren found 500 artifacts and a 17th-century coin

Around 500 artifacts from different eras, fragments of early Neolithic ceramics with imprints of ancient flora, and a 17th-century coin were found during archaeological excavations on the bank of the Shchara River in the Slonim district. The research was conducted by archaeologists led by historian Oleg Tkachev, as well as participants of a children's tourist and local history camp. This year, the camp is running for the eleventh time, Hrodna.life reports .

Among the discovered items are cores, flakes, and scrapers, as well as fragments of ancient ceramics. The unearthed artifacts belong to various historical periods — from the Stone Age to the 19th century, reports the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.

The children's archaeological camp is a joint project of the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Education Department of the Slonim District Executive Committee. This year, 25 schoolchildren took part in it.

During the camp's operation, young researchers explored more than 50 archaeological sites in the Slonim district. About 40 of them were previously unknown to specialists.

Over the years of the expedition's work, excavations and surveys took place near the villages of Talkaushchyna, Ryshchytsy, Zbochna, Zhyrovichy, Rusakova, Razanaushchyna, Parechcha, Malyshevichy, as well as the agro-town of Dzieraunaya.

In 2018, specialists and schoolchildren surveyed a section of the right bank of the Shchara, and in 2019 — the left bank of the river between Zhyrovichy and Rusakova. In 2020 and 2022, research was conducted on the Hryuda River, and in 2021 — on the left bank of the Shchara between Razanaushchyna and Parechcha.

The results of the camp's research were also included in the scientific publication "Historical and Cultural Heritage of Slonim Region. To the 770th anniversary of Slonim," which was released in 2024, reports the district newspaper "Slonimski Vesnik".

In addition to excavations, schoolchildren participate in tourist and sports events, visit museums, and learn about the history of their native land. This year, they visited the village of Talkaushchyna, where archaeological and historical monuments are located, and also explored the hillfort Kurauskaya Hara and another previously unknown hillfort.
