The European Union may allow European companies to transport Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) to third countries for at least another year. Volumes will be limited to 2025 levels, and the permit's validity may be extended later. The compromise still needs to be approved by EU country ambassadors, writes Financial Times.
Greece is seeking exceptions — in the interests of billionaire Georgios Prokopiou's shipping company Dynagas, which operates 27 gas carriers, including vessels capable of operating on Arctic routes for the Russian "Yamal LNG" project.
Without this concession, Athens had blocked the adoption of the 21st package of sanctions against Russia for more than a week. According to Financial Times, disputes over Russian LNG indicate that it is becoming increasingly difficult for EU countries to agree on new sanctions without affecting their own economic interests.
