Latvian Ministry of Interior proposes to completely close the only border crossing point with Belarus

The Latvian Ministry of Interior proposes to the country's government to temporarily suspend the operation of the "Pāternieki" border crossing point on the Latvian-Belarusian border. A draft of the relevant decision has already been prepared and submitted for approval, writes lsm.lv.

If the government supports this proposal, it would effectively mean a complete halt to movement through this point for citizens and cargo vehicles heading to or from Belarus.

Currently, "Pāternieki" is the only operational road border crossing point between Latvia and Belarus. There is also the "Indra" railway crossing point, but it is used only for freight trains, and passenger air travel between the countries has not been carried out for several years.

The Latvian Ministry of Interior stated that the closure is necessary to ensure the country's security, prevent illegal border crossings, and more effectively use the resources of the State Border Guard and other services in a crisis situation.

The Latvian agency claims that the pressure of illegal migration on the border with Belarus remains high and requires significant efforts from border guards. According to the Ministry of Interior, Belarus allegedly continues to allow and support the uncontrolled movement of third parties across the border, which creates an additional burden on Latvian state structures.

The ministry also noted that the active "Pāternieki" crossing point, under conditions of increased border security, maintains the possibility for "hybrid pressure," provocations, and intelligence-gathering activities.

Earlier, technical problems with information systems allegedly arose at the crossing point, due to which border crossing processing has not been carried out since July 31. The Latvian Border Guard service recommended people use other crossing points, including those on the border with Lithuania.

An enhanced border security regime in the Latvian borderlands with Belarus has been in effect for a long time and was extended by the Latvian government until the end of 2026. It applies to a number of border territories, including the Ludza, Krāslava, and Augšdaugava regions.
