A man with a roll of linoleum was not allowed into the Minsk metro. Is this legal?
In Minsk, metro security staff did not allow a man onto the "Mikhailova" station with a roll of linoleum. The incident occurred at the end of June and sparked widespread discussion after the video was published on social media, writes the Minsk-News agency.
The man claimed that he had folded the roll in half, so he considered it hand luggage allowed for transport. However, metro employees explained that even folded, the linoleum did not meet the requirements of the transport rules. They offered the passenger to further fold and tie up the roll so that its length would not exceed the established norms. According to metro representatives, the man refused to do so and started arguing.
During the conflict, the passenger filmed the conversation and later posted the recording online. In response, employees warned him about liability for disseminating personal data. Ultimately, the parties could not resolve the dispute on their own and announced their intention to call the police.
The Minsk Metro confirmed that the rules do not allow the transportation of luggage exceeding permissible dimensions. Security service employees have the right to check the dimensions of hand luggage using measuring devices.
According to current rules, only hand luggage within established dimensions can be carried free of charge. For luggage whose total dimensions are from 121 to 200 centimeters, as well as for rolls with a length of 101 to 170 centimeters and a diameter of 11 to 15 centimeters, a separate fare must be paid by purchasing an additional token. Moreover, one passenger may carry no more than two such pieces of luggage.
If the luggage dimensions exceed 200 centimeters in total measurements, it is not allowed in the metro, as this may create inconvenience and a threat to the safety of other passengers.
The police are currently conducting an investigation into the possible illegal dissemination of personal data of metro employees. If the man's actions are found to constitute an administrative offense, he could face a fine of up to 200 base units.
Online opinions on the incident were divided. Some users supported the passenger, but many sided with the metro employees, noting that they acted according to the rules and cared for passenger safety.
