Belarusian lawyer Aliaksandr Danilevich, previously sentenced to six years in prison in a case related to his professional activities, has been released. He announced his release by publishing a photo on his Facebook page.
Aliaksandr Danilevich was detained on May 20, 2022, by KGB officers at his workplace. Initially, he was held in the KGB pre-trial detention center, then transferred to pre-trial detention center No. 1 in Minsk. He was accused under articles related to calls for actions that, according to the investigation, allegedly harmed the national security of Belarus, as well as assisting extremist activities.
The investigation claimed that from August 2020 to May 2022, Danilevich provided legal assistance to representatives of the Belarusian Sport Solidarity Foundation, prepared and edited appeals to foreign companies, and gave interviews to an independent sports publication. The lawyer himself did not admit guilt and insisted that he acted exclusively within the scope of his professional activities.
The trial began in the Minsk City Court in March 2023. The prosecutor requested a sentence of ten years in prison for the lawyer, but on April 10, the court sentenced Danilevich to six years in a high-security penal colony. The appellate court upheld the verdict.
Before his detention, Aliaksandr Danilevich was a well-known specialist in international and sports law. He is fluent in several foreign languages, taught at the Faculty of International Relations of Belarusian State University for over twenty years, headed the Belarusian Rugby Federation, was a member of international bodies in anti-doping law, and underwent internships in Italy, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.
Shortly before his detention, Danilevich signed an anti-war appeal by Belarusian lawyers against the war in Ukraine. Following this, disciplinary proceedings were initiated against him in the legal profession, and he was dismissed from the Belarusian State University.
He served his sentence in penal colony No. 17 in Shklou, and was released earlier than the term set by the verdict. It is not yet known whether this was the result of a pardon or another legal decision.
