Belarusians in Threads helped "Sergei" with a broken leg. But it turned out he was a fraud

A resident of Una village, Lyozno district, allegedly lost his livelihood after breaking his leg and asked for help on Threads. But this story was fabricated, reported Svetlana Pukava, chairwoman of the Lyozno Village Council. A journalist from "Euroradio" called the official, posing as a Belarusian woman who wanted to help.

It all started when a Threads user under the nickname @sergo.sergo1 published a post, in which he claimed to live in Una village, work in a local shop, and found himself in a difficult financial situation after breaking his leg. He said that he could barely feed his children and also asked for help finding a part-time job.

The story generated a big response among social network users. Soon, "Sergei" wrote that strangers had visited his home with food, sweets, toys, and school supplies for the children.

After some time, he shared his card number. Some Threads users transferred money to him, while others were thrilled by how Belarusians were ready to support each other.

However, later, some of the audience began to doubt the truthfulness of this story, including whether anyone had actually visited "Sergei". According to one social media user, her comment with clarifying questions was hidden, and shortly thereafter, the man's page completely disappeared from the social network.

Svetlana Pukava, chairwoman of the Lyozno Village Council, to which Una village belongs, unequivocally stated in a conversation with a "Euroradio" journalist that this story is a fraudulent hoax.

— We don't have such people in Una," says the interlocutor. "At the address indicated by this 'Sergei', completely different people live – elderly summer residents, but they live with us permanently. I called them. They are in shock themselves."

I asked: "Maybe this is a relative of yours?" They replied: "No, not even close."

And I myself know the village well. There are no such people there, and there are no children there, in Una, either.

What will you do? Many people have already reacted to this story on social networks; some have transferred money.

— We informed the district executive committee. The ideology department will prepare a comment.

The Lyozno District Executive Committee confirmed that "Sergei" is a fraudster and promised to investigate this story.
