Journalists asked the Pentagon chief about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's recent letter regarding the shortage of air defense systems amidst intensified Russian attacks.
To this, Hegseth replied that the US is looking for opportunities to help Ukraine wherever possible.
"We are changing the way we produce all these kinds of critical ammunition to ensure that our companies are delivering not just a little more, but significantly more across the spectrum. Where we can help Ukraine, we do it; where we can empower Europe to do more, we do it," the official replied.
He also noted the activity of European allies who have stepped up their support for Ukraine.
"I am inspired by Europe's commitment to the cause. If you look at the amount of funds spent, Europe has stepped up, and Ukraine has been no less, if not more, effective in this process. Therefore, we want them to be able to defend themselves, and we will find a way to provide them with assistance," Hegseth stated.
Earlier, in a letter to US President Donald Trump and American congressmen, Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine "relies almost exclusively on the US" for defense against Russian ballistic missiles.
He also informed that during a massive attack on May 24, Russia used two "Oreshnik" medium-range ballistic missiles.
Senator Richard Blumenthal of the Democratic Party later stated that the US would respond to the Ukrainian President's letter, which spoke of a deficit in air defense systems.
