Nasha Niva has learned of several cases where security forces visited EHU graduates. Searches and interrogations of people associated with the university are taking place across the country.
A criminal case has been initiated regarding cooperation with EHU. Viasna reported that security forces are visiting current students and threatening criminal prosecution if they do not withdraw from the institution. Relatives of current EHU students are also being threatened with criminal cases — reportedly, if their children do not withdraw, criminal cases will be opened against their relatives. Human rights defenders are aware of at least 12 people who have been visited by security forces.
It is not yet known under which specific articles the criminal case was initiated. Possibly for participation in an "extremist formation."
Nasha Niva, in turn, is aware of two cases where former students were visited. The cases in question took place in Minsk and in one of the Belarusian district centers. One of the graduates who were visited finished EHU in 2019, the other in 2025. Security forces conducted a search on the grounds of looking for "extremist symbols."
Belarusian authorities declared EHU an "extremist organization" in April 2026. Around 100 students left the university after that.
Security forces claimed that criminal liability could threaten Belarusians who continue to teach or study at the university after it was recognized as an "extremist organization." At the same time, a channel close to the Ministry of Education stated that no one would be touched for old diplomas.
