Belarus has identified three promising sites for the construction of a radioactive waste disposal facility. This was announced by Mikhail Kisel, director of BelRAO, during a round table, writes BelTA.
One of the sites is located near the Belarusian NPP in the Astravets district. The second is in Mstsislaw, and another is in Khoiniki, next to the Polessie State Radiation-Ecological Reserve.
According to Mikhail Kisel, specialists are currently preparing an environmental impact assessment report for the future radioactive waste disposal facility. After this, a public discussion procedure will be held.
At the same time, the enterprise is already holding explanatory meetings with residents of the districts where the promising sites have been identified.
As Mikhail Kisel noted, the disposal facility is a high-tech engineering object that will have a multi-barrier structure and ensure the safe storage and disposal of waste for decades, as long as radioactive activity persists.
For this, if necessary, the waste is mixed with cement material, placed in safe containers, and then — in a special repository.
