"We were not given a housing loan in Kyiv, even though my husband is a Ukrainian serviceman, a war veteran who has been fighting for five years and was severely wounded. And we weren't given it because his wife, that is, I, am Belarusian with a Belarusian passport. And it doesn't matter what kind of Belarusian you are, and what you've done for Ukraine and for Belarus to be free from Lukashenka's regime. It's offensive, to say the least," wrote opera singer Margarita Levchuk.
"And most of all, I'm offended for my husband, who is ready to give his life for his country, and has many times almost done so, but those who have never sat in trenches deny him what his family needs most right now — their own place. Shame and disgrace. When will Ukrainians finally understand that Belarusians are not Lukashenka, especially those Belarusians who, like Ukrainians now, live in Ukraine during the war and fight on Ukraine's side?" she added.
In Belarus, several criminal cases have been opened against Margarita; she has lived in Vilnius since the summer of 2020. In June 2024, Margarita was already convicted of "participation in the extremist formation 'Rudabelskaya Pakazukha' (Part 1, Article 361-1 of the Criminal Code) and committing a number of other crimes as part of it." At that time, she was sentenced in absentia to a term of six to eight years of imprisonment with a fine of 500 to 800 basic units. The exact term was not reported.
Then she moved to Ukraine, where she married Ruslan Karniyko, who is fighting on the front. In 2024, the couple had a child. The boy was named Maksym.
