In the place where Gomel began, a monument to a Russian field marshal has started to be erected
Works have begun in Gomel to install a monument to Russian General-Field Marshal Ivan Paskevich. The location chosen for it is more than symbolic — one of the main historical and tourist points of the city, writes the publication "Shtodzen" ("Everyday").

The monument will appear in the park near the old 19th-century bridge over the Hamiayuk River. It was in the area where this small river flows into the Sozh that the ancient settlement from which Gomel grew was located. The origin of the city's name is also associated with the Hamiayuk.
Currently, part of the embankment near the bridge is blocked by a construction fence. A small stone with a plaque reading "A monument to General-Field Marshal Ivan Fyodorovich Paskevich will be installed here" has been placed at the site of the future monument. This inscription is made on behalf of the Russian Military Historical Society. The work is at an initial stage, and the completion dates are not yet known.

The intention to erect a monument to Paskevich in Gomel became known last autumn. The now former head of Gomel, Uladzimir Pryvalau, traveled to Moscow to coordinate the model. The Russian Military Historical Society initiated the project. This same organization previously "donated" a monument to Soviet military leader Konstantin Rokossovsky to Gomel.

The future monument has a clear imperial reference. The Gomel monument is to replicate the monument to Paskevich that once stood in Warsaw. Ivan Paskevich commanded Russian troops in suppressing the 1830-1831 uprising, after which he received the title of Prince of Warsaw and became the Tsar's governor in the Kingdom of Poland.
Nevertheless, Paskevich's image is already present in Gomel's urban space. The sculptural composition "A Walk with Borzoi," unveiled in 2015, is located in the park. It depicts Fyodor Paskevich — Ivan Paskevich's son and the last representative of the family who owned the Gomel estate — during a stroll with his borzoi hounds, Lord and Marko.
