Former Minister of Defense Fiodarau Called for Elections in Ukraine

Former Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Mykhailo Fiodarau, recently dismissed from his post amidst scandal, called for a search for a mechanism to hold elections in the country even under conditions of ongoing war. In his address on August 18, he stated that Russia should not determine when Ukrainians can elect their government again, writes "Ukrainska Pravda".

According to Fiodarau, it is necessary to answer the question of how the state should function if the war continues for years. He believes that democracy cannot remain a hostage to Russian aggression and that Ukraine must find a legal, safe, and realistic way to restore a full-fledged democratic process.

The politician acknowledged that this is not an easy task, as it requires ensuring the possibility of voting for military personnel, millions of Ukrainians abroad, and residents of frontline regions, as well as guaranteeing the security of elections, the independence of institutions, and trust in the results. However, according to him, complexity does not mean impossibility.

Fiodarau also expressed concern that an impression might arise in society that personal loyalty, rather than professionalism and work results, is becoming the main criterion for appointments to state positions. He emphasized that such a model is unacceptable for a modern state, especially one fighting for its existence.

Separately, the former minister touched upon the problem of corruption, noting that during wartime, its consequences become particularly dangerous. In addition, he stated that the country should not remain without a fully appointed Minister of Defense for long, as important decisions must be made daily in conditions of war.

Fiodarau's statement came amid ongoing rallies in support of the former head of the defense department and after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy submitted nominations for the posts of Ministers of Defense and Foreign Affairs to parliament.
