Stolen masterpieces by Renoir, Cézanne, and Matisse found in Italy. Nine Moldovan citizens detained
Italian police have found three paintings by Renoir, Cézanne, and Matisse, stolen in March from the Magnani-Rocca Foundation museum near Parma. Nine Moldovan citizens have been detained in connection with the case. The total value of the artworks is estimated at more than 9 million euros.
In Parma, police found the stolen "Fish" by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, "Still Life with Cherries" by Paul Cézanne, and "Odalisque on the Terrace" by Henri Matisse. The paintings were discovered during a search of one of the suspects' homes.
Renoir's "Fish" is estimated at approximately €3 million, Cézanne's "Still Life with Cherries" at €6 million, and Matisse's work at approximately €20 thousand.
The theft occurred on the night of March 23. The intruders entered the museum through a broken window and removed the three paintings in less than three minutes.
Surveillance camera footage shows two men with covered faces taking the paintings off the walls and handing them to an accomplice waiting outside.
The investigation lasted about five months. During searches, police detained nine Moldovan citizens. Five of them were charged with direct involvement in the theft. The investigation also links this group to at least 14 other thefts in the region.
