Patriarch Kirill released a book on the "metaphysics of war", where God determines the victors
Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia has released a book titled "War. Beyond Visible Causes and Consequences," in which he reflects on the so-called "metaphysics of war." The publication's release was announced by the press service of the Russian Orthodox Church.
The annotation to the book claims that the outcome of wars "is determined by God," and victory goes to "those who are on the side of light." According to the author, war can have "redemptive significance," touches upon "metaphysical boundaries and goals of Russia," and also has, as claimed, a "racial aspect."
The book also states that a person must be a "warrior of the Lord," resist evil, and protect high moral ideals. Kirill asserts that the Russian people "have the ability to win" and should not shy away from their "historical mission to be victorious." Concepts such as sacrifice, feat, patriotism, and victory, in his opinion, must be viewed through the prism of spiritual understanding.
Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Patriarch Kirill has repeatedly publicly supported the actions of the Russian authorities. In his speeches, he claimed that Russian servicemen participating in the war allegedly do not violate the commandment "Thou shalt not kill," called for thanking God for Vladimir Putin's rule, called him an example of a "good Christian," and stated that war participants who die can count on salvation.
In connection with this position, several European Union countries have repeatedly proposed including Patriarch Kirill in sanction lists. However, to date, EU countries have not managed to reach a unified decision on imposing personal sanctions against the head of the Russian Orthodox Church.
