Major and prestigious Salzburg Festival to be opened with a speech by Maria Kalesnikava

The orchestra at the opening will be conducted by Belarusian conductor Vitali Alekseenok, writes DW.

In Austrian Salzburg, on Sunday, July 26, the official opening ceremony of the Salzburg Festival will take place — one of the largest global forums for classical music and theater.

The traditional solemn speech annually opens the festival and sets the tone for its public discourse. This year, the organizers invited Maria Kalesnikava — one of the leaders of the 2020 protests in Belarus — to speak at the opening. A professional flutist and conductor, Kalesnikava is an honorary professor at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg and a recipient of the International Charlemagne Prize.

"Maria Kalesnikava is proof that it is art that gives people courage and support in life. The language of music and poetry is always stronger than violence, tyranny, and arbitrary rule," — quotes the festival's website, citing the words of artistic director Karin Bergmann.

The musical program of the opening ceremony will be led by Belarusian conductor Vitali Alekseenok. He will conduct the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg. After the 2020 presidential elections in Belarus, the conductor openly spoke out against Alexander Lukashenka's regime and later described the events of that time in the book 'White Days of Minsk. Our Dream of a Free Belarus'. Currently, Alekseenok is the principal conductor of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf and Duisburg.
