“Some of the injured groaned in pain, some got out of the car on their own.” Eyewitnesses — about the horrific accident involving servicemen near Asipovichy
The car crashed four kilometers from the military training ground.
On Friday around 08:00, a tragedy occurred on the highway near Asipovichy: a military truck overturned. Two young men – a 21-year-old conscript and a 26-year-old junior sergeant on contract service, who were passengers – died. Another 14 people were taken to the hospital. It is known that a 20-year-old serviceman was behind the wheel. Onliner.by visited the scene of the tragedy.
At the accident scene, the picture had barely changed: the truck lay overturned, the cabin heavily crushed. Personal belongings of the servicemen were scattered around – a smartphone, food (bread, milk), rubber flip-flops, combat boots. Sand was scattered under the body, and pieces of logs and plywood lay around.
Traces of blood remained on the asphalt, which even the rain had not washed away. Used bandages, a syringe, and remnants of an IV drip lay on the roadside.
One eyewitness, who arrived at the scene about ten minutes after the accident, said that about ten people were lying near the truck's body.
Some of the injured groaned in pain, some got out of the car on their own, while others, according to him, were thrown out on impact.
He also claims that four or five people had to be extricated by MES employees, as they were severely trapped by vehicle elements. The deceased were also removed from the body.
— I saw an IV drip being administered to one of the injured right there on the spot, — said a resident of a nearby street. — They wanted to move another guy, but someone shouted: "Don't touch him, he has a spinal fracture!"
MES employees declined official comments but noted that the rescue operation was complex: special tools had to be used, and they had to act very carefully to avoid inflicting additional injuries on the victims.
Another local resident said that he woke up around 08:30, opened the window, and saw a large number of people, special equipment, and ambulances, including some from Babruysk.
— I saw one of the guys lying on the ground suddenly move, and medics immediately rushed to him.
When asked why he didn't hear the accident itself, the man replied:
— Four kilometers from here is a military training ground. We are already used to hearing things rumble. I also heard one of the servicemen say that they were initially supposed to turn right, towards Asipovichy.
— Were the injured young guys? Conscripts?
— I think so.
— They were probably about to be discharged. This is the most dangerous intersection in Asipovichy! — the man adds.
He also noted that he considers this intersection one of the most dangerous in the area.
Other motorists recount: they passed the accident scene around 11:00 AM — they saw the bodies of the deceased.
— Information about the accident had already reached Minsk. My daughter called, asking: "What happened there in Asipovichy?"
Investigation continues
Employees of various departments worked at the scene until late in the evening. They recorded all circumstances of the accident, took photographs and video, including using a quadcopter.
The question of the truck's speed was also discussed. A temporary speed limit of up to 50 km/h is in effect on this section of the road due to repair work.
Again, one eyewitness states: allegedly, someone among the injured claimed that the vehicle was traveling at about 40 km/h, but the exact picture, of course, will only be restored by experts from the responsible departments.
Closer to 15:00, the damaged truck began to be righted. First, it was lifted to remove the logs used as supports. Then it was overturned onto one side. And later, it was put back on its wheels and towed away with a special cable and another military vehicle.
During breaks in this process, other servicemen used shovels to clear scattered sand from the highway and collect scattered items.
Afterward, forensic experts began to ascertain (with the assistance of servicemen) whether the truck had any malfunctions. In front of our eyes, the brakes were checked, and it was announced: at this stage, there are no complaints about any of the wheels. Other malfunctions have not yet been detected. But the key word is "yet." The inspection and investigation are only beginning.
The truck driver is alive and conscious. However, there were traces of blood in the truck cabin.
